What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #101

How Positive Reinforcement training actually trains and reinforces unwanted and even dangerous behaviors.

In yesterdays Tip I mentioned this a little bit, let me get slightly more deep on how this works for folks that do NOT believe in ever saying NO to a dog or how to properly punish your dog which is how you stop unwanted behaviors.

Examples
1)Your dog jumps up on you and you either (ignore the dog, as MANY trainers suggest) one of the most dangerous things to do for a human to allow. or you tell the dog to SIT when they are jumping, so what have you trained the dog to do? A chain of commands, jump on human, sit and then reward...its a pretty simple concept and that is why so many dogs and dog owners struggle stopping it. Teaching a dog to not jump is actually teaching a dog a reliable sit IMO.

2)Dog starts nipping your hands, pants, whatever. You re-direct the dog to a tug toy or something you want your dog to bite. So what have you taught your dog? whenever they want a tug toy, they can just ask for one, sort of like ordering up a pizza, funny how when your dog nips you or your kids a chew toy shows up.

3) your dog is whining in the crate (they have already been outside and do not have to go to the bathroom), you are trying to get sleep, so what do you do? You go let your dog out of the crate and have your dog come into your bed with you.

So who is training who? All these bad/unwanted behaviors are trained and reinforced with positive reinforcement training. The only way to stop an unwanted behavior is to learn how to properly punish a dog effectively.
